Mobile Workforce
The explosive growth of the mobile workforce is changing how companies are choosing
to conduct business. Today's communications infrastructure must take into account
the growing need for mobile workers to keep in constant contact with their
organizations' knowledge bases. To facilitate this, many companies are deploying
mobile devices as vital tools to empower their mobile workers. Employees are constantly
on the go working at client sites, branch offices, at home, or with business partners
located across town or around the globe. The mobile device has become a tool for
delivering mission-critical information, including email, contact, calendar,
and more recently, access to corporate applications.
The best way to support the mobile workforce is through the concept of Total Mobility.
Under this concept, the mobile worker uses various devices and networks
(wired and wireless) to gain access to central application servers
(server-based computing environment) where all their data and applications reside.
The basic concept is that you always connect to your office as opposed to taking
your office with you. With this type of environment, all the issues related to
data synchronization, device configuration and support, application upgrade, and
security can be easily addressed. Below is a diagram that depicts our model for
Total Mobility.
The model shows how Total Mobility can be addressed in various locations like the office,
home, hotel, airport, etc. The network connectivity is addressed via the best available
for the location. This could be either by wired LAN, 802.11 hotspot or WLAN, or Wireless
WAN. The applications and data are all provided by the Application Servers. End user
devices include desktop, notebook, PDA, or web tablet.
